St. Peter’s Basilica – a must-see. Breaking ground in 1506, it was completed in 1626. St. Peter’s Basilica is located in the smallest country in the world, the Vatican. There are only 800 residents that call the Vatican their home. St. Peter’s Basilica’s monument to Catholicism is gargantuan. It is 730 feet long, and the dome reaches 450 feet. It can easily fit the Statue of Liberty. The basilica can fit 60,000 people and the adjacent St. Peters Square holds 400,000 people.
The exterior of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Square is incredible to feast your eyes upon. And the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica is ornately decorated with reliefs, gilding, marble and sculptures. Despite this being one of the best known landmarks in the world, this is a must-see that will not disappoint. I went with Walks of Italy.
Up to 25,000 people visit the Vatican a day. It becomes unpleasant and difficult to enjoy this amazing place. I strongly encourage you to take one of the exclusive tours that begin an hour prior to general admission. This one hour head start makes all the difference in the world.
Disclaimer: This tour was provided gratis by Walks of Italy (just click above!). If you book a tour through WOI, I will earn a small commission.
And make sure you visit the beauty of Saint Mark’s basilica in Venice.
