White Temple – A Must-See. Wat Rong Khun also known by its nickname the White Temple is a contemporary and outlandish temple located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The White Temple is a sparkly alabaster that sometimes glitters in the sun and shimmers in the surrounding pond.
The White Temple only began construction in 1997 and is privately owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat. He views this temple as an offering to Lord Buddha. He has spent over $1,000,000 and it is not scheduled to be completed until 2070. Kositpipat is expecting immortal life in exchange for his generosity.
Prior to crossing an arched bridge over a small pond, you will witness hundreds of hands reaching to the skies. The hands represent unrestrained desire, and will be interspersed with screaming decapitated skulls. By crossing this bridge you will be abdicating your desire.
The main temple also known as the Ubosot contains some bizarre murals unlike any I have witnessed in any Thai temples previously. Figures of Kung Fu Panda and a Minion interact with Neo from the Matrix and Michael Jackson. A haunting and burning World Trade Center is entangled with a hose dumping petrol in a devil’s mouth.
Near the exit, heads dangle from a tree including Batman and Freddy Krueger. There is another warning to avoid cigarette or whiskey. Don’t be surprised by anything you see at the White Temple. White Temple – A Must-See.
And when you are in Thailand make sure you visit the Grand Palace.
