The plan for Guatemala was to spend New Year’s Eve in the colonial town of Antigua. After that, to explore the Mayan ruins of Tikal.
Antigua is one of those charming towns, easy to wander aimlessly, eat in cafes and have drinks as you watch time pass by. In addition, there are a lot of activities in the surround area, such as climbing volcanoes. New Year’s Eve was spent at rooftop restaurant watching the fireworks bring in the new year.
Tikal is considered one of the best Mayan ruins in Central America. Ruins are spread over a wide are in a thick green forest. It is a must-visit place, especially for sunrise and sunset.

Tikal is a stunning place. I had the opportunity to go there as part of a day trip when I was in San Ignacio, Belize for a few days. Did you hear about El Mirador? It’s supposed to be even larger than Tikal, but you’re looking at a five day hike along the Guatemalan jungle and only a small fraction of it has been uncovered since it’s “discovery” back in 2003.
I will have to add El Mirador to my list! Sounds compelling … but 5 days is a bit of a hike 😉
