Namibia is not necessarily the first country that comes to mind when you consider visiting Africa. For many travelers, countries like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, and Morocco are often the first to visit on this diverse continent. But, by not including Namibia you are missing one of Africa’s true gems. Through these 20 photos I am going to share with you these Namibia highlights.
Namibia with a long coast on the Atlantic Ocean is located just north of South Africa. It has had a challenging past including genocide, occupation, and revolution, but today it is considered one of the safest countries in Africa. Namibia is also set up for visitors with a robust tourist infrastructure.
Namibia offers so much for the traveler and these twenty photos share why Namibia should be on your travel bucket list.
Dune 45
Dune 45 is a star dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. The vibrant orange-red, desert is composed of ancient five million year old sands. It is 85 meters (279 feet) high and provides a fantastic view. It is well worth the climb.
Deadvlei
In the shadow of Big Daddy, claimed to be the highest sand dune in the world, is Deadvlei which means “dead marsh”. Deadvlei is a white clay pan inside the Namib-Naukluft Park that is sparsely populated with camel thorn trees. These trees have all died from a lack of water over 700 years ago. Today, all that remains are the darkened skeletons of the tree. Of all the Namibia highlights, this might be my favorite.
Scenic Flight
While in Namibia I joined a two hour plus scenic flight tracing the coast of Namibia. This was a fantastic opportunity to view this country from above and see over 600 km of the Skeleton Coast. Check out more of my experience on my scenic flight.

Etosha National Park
This is Namibia’s second largest park in northern Namibia. It is chock-full of animals. A fantastic place for a game drive especially with its numerous watering holes. Of the best places to visit in Namibia, Etosha National Park is a true highlight.
Cheetah Conservation Fund
Twenty percent of the world’s cheetahs reside in Namibia. Visiting the Cheetah Conservation Fund is a great opportunity to learn about their mission to save the cheetah as well as see some of these magnificent creatures up close. Read more about Nat Geo Journeys and G Adventures efforts in saving the Big Cats at the Cheetah Conservation Fund.
Twyfelfontein
Twyfelfontein Valley has been inhabited for over 6,000 years. In the area are over 5,000 rock carvings that date back over 2,000 years. Take a walk back in history.
The People
Namibia has the second lowest population density in the world with under three million people yet has twelve recognized languages and over ten ethnic groups. It is mostly a Christian nation with 10-20% still practicing indigenous beliefs.
Lodging
Namibia has some incredible lodges. Feel free to relax after a long day in the desert or on safari at a lodge like this.

Namibia Recap
The best time to visit Namibia is not a straight forward answer. If you visit during their winter, June through August, you have a better chance to view wildlife at the parks since the animals will visit the watering holes more often. But of course, winter means cold weather, sometimes dipping below 0. Conversely, if you visit during the summer, you can expect burning hot days in the desert.
Namibia offers many lodging offers, from high end lodges to Namibia camping. This will determine your costs throughout your visit.
There are so many places to visit in Namibia and these highlights serve as a sample Namibia itinerary. When it comes to things to do in Namibia, my highlights include quad biking and a scenic flight over the Skeleton Coast, but you might want to consider sky diving or desert surfing. For Namibia destinations, my highlight was the dead trees set between the orange-hued dunes of Deadvlei.

Beautiful, Namibia is high on my list. I’ve always wanted to see the Skeleton Coast, maybe from reading too many Wilbur Smith novels. And the dunes.
Spent 3 months in South Africa a few years back and can’t wait to go back to Africa, the best continent for adventure.
And great people pics as always.
